GOLD: SOLID BRASS OR BRONZE
SB-Solid Brass:
Brass is a softer metal than Stainless Steel or Bronze, but has always been known for it's non rust qualities. Gold in color, it's also attractive and compliements tack with its traditional appearance. However, because of oxidation, it will tarnish and will need polishing if a shiny brass appearance is desired. Because of third world demand for copper (one of the metals used to produce Brass), cost has become comparable to Stainless Steel in recent years and in some cases is more expensive.
BR-Bronze is stronger than Brass but not as strong as Stainless Steel. Color is dark golden bronze and will tarnish, though usually not as noticeable as Brass. Availability is limited and is more costly than Brass.
SILVER: STAINLESS STEEL - CHROME OR NICKEL PLATED BRASS
SS-Stainless Steel: Known for its superior strength & non corrodsive qualities, it's recognized by equestrians as a trusted metal for equine hardware. Color: Silver gray
CB-Chrome or NB-Nickel Plated Solid Brass: Solid Brass with either a Chrome or Nickel Plating. Chrome plating has a brighter finish; Nickel resembles the nickel coin.
ZDC-Zinc Die Cast is similiar in strength to brass, but will corrode in time. Plating may wear off with use.
Scissor Snaps for Trail Reins
To prevent the Scissor section of snap from sticking & not staying closed, periodically oil snaps with a household lubricant. If using a Solid Brass Snap, (gold or silver) replace approximately every two years of use, or when swivel post becomes loose, as brass, being a softer metal, will in time wear thin. All Snaps benefit from an occasional oiling, making riding more enjoyable, as well as safer for the rider.
